Leisure & Surroundings

The villages of Niendorf and Hohen Wieschendorf belong to Hohenkirchen, a picturesque municipality situated between hills, meadows and forests and the blue of the sea near Wismar. Due to the landscape, the community offers good conditions for active leisure and recreation, e.g. hiking, cycling and horse riding.

Here you can find out more about our history since 1968.

Tidal activity with a tidal range of approx. 20 cm can still be detected, but is usually overlaid by wind-dependent water level fluctuations. In general, the water level falls with south-westerly winds and rises with north-easterly winds. Water level fluctuations of over 1 m were observed within a few hours.

You will find an overview of the prices at the bottom of this page.

Child-friendly recreational beach with large bath tub

In front of our campsite, after crossing a road, there is a natural beach with a wide shallow water zone and sandbanks that dry out at low tide. The water is always 2° warmer due to the shallow depth. This is ideal for (water) walking and for little bathing mermaids and mermen as well as non-swimmers. Enjoy the Baltic Sea in a very special way at ostseequelle.camp

The fine sandy beach invites you to sunbathe. Beach chairs can be rented on site.

But swimmers and recreational water sports enthusiasts don’t miss out either. After an average of about 30 metres (depending on the water level), the beach becomes deeper and you can swim in the deeper waters. For sailors and families with boats, the marina in Boltenhagen or Marina Hohen Wieschendorf is a good place to moor.

For sure-footed hikers, we recommend the option along the beach, around the Huk, to Hohen Wieschendorf. From the Liebeslaube campsite, you have the option of hiking along the beach or up on the cliff. From the top you have a great view of the bay. Underneath, you can quickly cool off or have your feet massaged by pebbles;-) On the way, you can get something to eat at Little Italy at Marina Hohen Wieschendorf before starting the return journey via Beckerwitz. Plan on 3-4 hours.

Beach fee / visitor's tax

Guest fee

Our municipality was recognised as a tourist resort in 2022 and plans to levy a visitor’s tax from 1.1.2024 onwards. This will then be included in the price.
We hope for an unbureaucratic solution.

The Nature Paradise

Welcome to the region around the Wohlenberger Wiek, which has long been an insider’s tip for many holidays for day visitors.
The last ice age pushed together an unmistakable coastal landscape here. Here you will find gently swaying hills, small mixed tree and floodplain forests, pearl necklaces of pollarded willows along meadows, streams, bridges, water ponds and field edges, densely vegetated ponds and lakes, flower strewn meadows and -naturally- the Baltic Sea. The soil is fertile, the landscape provides breeding and resting places for thousands of water birds on their annual migration south.

Bordered by the curved beach of the Baltic Sea, situated between the tourist centres of Boltenhagen and Wismar, this region has preserved an unspoiltness rarely found anywhere else – a paradise for hikers, families with children and bathers. Here you will find peace and quiet and – after a short walk – a variety of sights and leisure activities.

The beautiful natural beach stretches along the water; wooded steep banks alternate with flat beach zones.

The importance of seagrass for the Baltic Sea ecosystem

The Baltic Sea, one of the most fascinating bodies of water in our world, holds many secrets and treasures beneath its calm surface. One of these mostly hidden treasures is seagrass, a plant that is often overlooked but has an enormous impact on the health and diversity of this sea. After a storm and a strong swell, we get to see seagrass on the beach of the Wohlenberger Wiek.

What is seagrass?

Seagrass is a group of flowerless plants that grow underwater in salty waters. In the Baltic Sea, it is mainly species such as true seagrass (Zostera marina) and narrow-leaved seagrass (Zostera angustifolia) that dominate the underwater landscape. These plants form dense meadows that spread out on the seabed.

The multiple benefits of seagrass:

1. environmental protection: seagrass meadows play a crucial role in protecting coastlines. They mitigate erosion by slowing down waves and trapping sediments. This helps protect coasts from storm surges and sea level rise.

2. habitat and food source: These underwater meadows provide an important habitat for numerous species, including fish, crustaceans and mussels. Many fish species use seagrass as a nursery for their young.

3. water quality: seagrass plays a crucial role in improving water quality. The plants filter nutrients from the water and help maintain the ecological balance in the Baltic Sea.

Climate change: Seagrass also plays a role in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and converting it into biomass. This helps to reduce the greenhouse effect.

The positive aspect: no dirt or waste

A remarkable aspect of seagrass is that it is generally free of dirt or waste. Unlike plastic and other debris often found in the oceans, seagrass is a natural element of the ecosystem. It does not pollute the waters, but helps to keep them clean and healthy. After it washes up on beaches, it is removed over the summer season after a few weeks during beach cleaning. In winter it helps to prevent erosion of the coast. This ensures that we can enjoy a beautiful wide sandy beach. Without the removal of the seaweed, the beach could completely overgrow, as you can see in the direction of Wohlenberg.

Over time, awareness of the importance of seagrasses in the Baltic Sea and other marine ecosystems has increased significantly. Efforts to conserve and restore seagrass beds are being stepped up worldwide as more and more people recognise the essential role these plants play in our environment.

In the Baltic Sea and elsewhere, it is important to promote seagrass conservation to preserve the ecological health of these fragile waters. Seagrass is not only beautiful to look at, but a valuable ally in our efforts to protect and preserve the seas and coasts.

An outdoor public bathing facility. In addition to the actual swimming facilities, this facility also consists of changing rooms, toilets, sunbathing areas and is supervised by attendants. A small snack bar is also available.
